Domestic Violence Awareness Month Purple Walk in Downtown Truckee

Domestic Violence Awareness Month Purple Walk in Downtown Truckee

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month; in recognition, Sierra Community House invites the community to join staff, survivors, and supporters on Thursday, October 16 for a short downtown walk in Truckee as part of the national Purple Thursday campaign. Participants are encouraged to wear purple to show solidarity with survivors of domestic violence. The walk will also feature a special art installation called the "The Clothesline Project" created by local survivors, amplifying their voices and resilience. When: Thursday, October 16, 2025 4:00 – 5:00 p.m. Where: Downtown Truckee. Gathering at Victory Highway Eagle Monument across from the Truckee Train Depot, then walking up and down the sidewalks before dispersing at 5PM Why: Domestic violence impacts communities everywhere, including here in the rural Truckee/North Tahoe region, where geographic isolation, limited housing, and small-town dynamics can create unique barriers to safety and recovery. Sierra Community House responds to these challenges with confidential services for individuals and families experiencing violence, including a 90-day safe house program, a 24/7 local helpline, and a legal team specializing in restraining orders, family law, and other services critical to survivor safety. In addition, the agency provides counseling, advocacy, and prevention programs aimed at building long-term community safety and resilience.
